PEANUT BUTTER DOG TREATS
Today is Wilbur's first birthday!!! To say he changed our lives is an understatement. This big 65-pound ball of fluff is full of sass and lots of love. I wanted to do something special for him on his big day (since he totally knows what's going on...) and attempted to make homemade dog treats for the first time.
I had no idea it was so easy to make dog treats from scratch! These only have four ingredients—creamy peanut butter, pumpkin purée, eggs, and whole wheat flour.
I got this adorable copper dog bone cookie cutter on Amazon for under $10. It's pretty big, so if you have smaller pups, go for a smaller size. Or search for a two-pack — that way you can make some small ones for training and big ones for more rare treats.
There are so many other delicious recipes for dog treats that I want to try. Some have oats, banana, or creamy nut butters — now that I know how simple it is, I'll definitely be whipping these up more often.
1 cup pumpkin purée
1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
2 large eggs
3 cups whole wheat flour (more as needed)
1. preheat oven to 350º.
2. in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or in a large bowl with your hand mixer), beat pumpkin, peanut butter, and eggs on medium speed until well combined, about 1–2 minutes. gradually add flour at low speed, mixing until just incorporated. if needed, add additional flour (slowly!) until dough isn't sticky.
3. lightly flour your countertop and knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together (and isn't crumbly). using a rolling pin (or a wine bottle and plastic wrap), roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. use your cookie cutter to cut out dog bones until you've used all the dough. i kept re-rolling the dough scraps until the dough was pretty much all used, and came out with 14 big treats.
4. place bones on cookie sheet and bake until edges are golden brown, about 20 minutes. let cool completely.
