EAT + DRINK SEATTLE
ICYMI: J and I were in Seattle last weekend. He's on a 2-week-long work trip and I decided that was too long to be home alone so I trotted on out there to explore with him! And by explore, I mean EAT ALL THE THINGS.
So here's a little Seattle Travel Guide. It's honestly just food/drink recommendations. We did other things but these were the highlights because they just tasted so good!!!!
We love Bloody Mary's and usually start our day drinking this way. The ambiance and drinks at McMenamin's Six Arms was perfect. It was right around the corner from our hotel downtown! Worth stopping by just to see the quirky decor.
If you aren't eating seafood in Seattle, you're doing it wrong. We hit up The Crab Pot (near Pike Place Market, on the water) and ordered copious amounts of seafood (crab, mussels, shrimp, clams, etc) served on paper with garlic butter and a big ol' loaf of sourdough.
Victrola Coffee Roasters was also right around the corner from our hotel and SO cute. Try the almond croissant and a creamy dirty chai. PS the natural light is perfect for that Insta!
Right outside the Allrecipes office in downtown Seattle (where Jordan was working!), food trucks gather each day at lunchtime. We tried Nosh, a British pub food truck that won Best Food Truck in Seattle in 2016. We had the fish and chips, which was a HUGE white fish, flakily battered and fried, with seasoned fries. Soooo good and spot-on!
While Jordan was working, I was left to my own devices. So I took a good book over to Red Cedar & Sage and enjoyed the beautiful afternoon light, some prosecco, and a Pike Moscow Mule.
While Seattle is known as Starbucks' starting place, there's also a vast array of local coffeeshops and cafes that I would pay big money to have right around the corner. Like this one — Zeitgeist Coffee. We looooved their espresso and the antique ironwork.
If you read nothing else from this guide, READ THIS. The Fat Hen is tucked away in the Ballard neighborhood — a small (25-seat) cafe bursting with natural light, colorful dishes, and fresh-squeezed mimosas (grapefruit and orange!). J had that day's special, a salsa verde egg bake with chorizo and cilantro. It was INCREDIBLE and there was a perfect amount of sauce left over for dunking the chewy bread in. I had an insanely fresh crab cake benedict with top-notch Hollandaise and a light side salad. Well worth the 30 minute wait!
Does it count as a chain restaurant if the bulk of the locations are in Japan? Per the recommendation of J's Seattle coworkers, we tried Kizuki Ramen and Izakaya. Jordan had the spicy ramen and I tried the miso ramen. Both delicious and so flavorful — also try the Japanese pork buns.
And don't forget about breweries! What Seattle lacks in sunshine it makes up for in breweries. We tried Fremont Brewing, known for their urban beer garden, wide range of brews, and dog-friendly atmosphere. It did not disappoint! We posted up for the better part of an afternoon and I tried a handful of gose sours, while J enjoyed many an oatmeal stout.
From the taco king and queen of Des Moines, you didn't really think we'd travel somewhere together and NOT eat tacos, right??? We hit up Villa Escondida, an authentic Oaxacan restaurant. The margs were potent and not too syrupy, and the food was BEYOND good. I had the carnitas tacos with black beans and rice (and a delish salsa verde!), J had the enchiladas de verde con pollo.
At my dad's recommendation (shoutout Danno!), we ventured up to the Leschi neighborhood, on the east side of Seattle right on Lake Washington. Meet the Moon is a beautiful, quirky cafe offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We enjoyed biscuits and chicken sausage gravy and a carne asada skillet. Both delectable, but I would recommend adding the fried chicken to the biscuits and gravy. Especially if you're on a diet.
Oh, speaking of Starbucks! Starbs was founded in Seattle in 1971. The Starbucks Reserve Roastery & Tasting Room is located right up in the Capitol Hill area (just nine blocks from the original Pike Place location!), so naturally we took a look. There's free admission, a restaurant, and two bars to sit at and sample espresso, pour-overs, and siphon coffee blends from all over the world.
Just across the street from the Reserve Roastery is the Taylor Shellfish Farms Oyster Bar. We knew we had to stop in for fresh oysters and crisp rosé (okay, and beer). We did the Shucker's Dozen, which included oysters from all around the island.
Also in Capitol Hill is Skillet. We had been out and about all day and really just wanted a few apps to split. Pictured: sauteed Brussels sprouts and Reuben fritters. Not pictured: an ugly, but delectable, poutine.
Every Moscow Mule we drank had Seattle local Rachel's Ginger Beer in it. And Rachel's Ginger Beer's flagship location is right down by Pike Place Market! In the interest of ginger beer drinks and great Instagrammable shots of the market, we checked it out. We tried the El Diablo and a classic Moscow Mule.
Our last meal together in Seattle? A wood-fired pizza from Serious Pie — "a pizzeria with a breadmaker's soul". We had an unforgettable pie with soft eggs, smoked prosciutto, local greens, and pecorino sardo. Great pizza and great service!
