Winter's a rough time all around—colder, drier, harsher. And I'm not just talking about the weather. The cooler months really take a toll on our bodies, which is why it's crucial to maintain a pampering schedule in the winter. Yes, it's much easier to notice that it's time for that biweekly pedi in the summer when sandals are on and hot pink polish is in. But keeping up with treating your body to luxurious things like blowouts, pedicures, and facials is necessary. You'll thank yourself once we make it out of yet another winter, and your mind can probably use the escape anyway.
Here are my favorite places to go for a little pampering in Des Moines.
Salon Spa W I've been a regular here for over three years. Come for the top-of-the-line cuts and colors, and stay for the free wine, paraffin hand dips, neck massages, and Aveda products. The service is outstanding and there's a built-in polish bar.
Blo Blow Dry Bar We had the privilege of testing out Blo for my day job when it first opened in the East Village. The atmosphere feels like when you're getting ready with all your friends before a big night out—just a bunch of girlfriends, lots of pink, and plenty of wine and good music. Definitely a special-occasion ordeal, but the cute cupcakes and pastries make up for the price.
Penelopie Beauty Bar Penelopie literally does it all, from parties to classes to blowouts to styling to bridal. Choose a package for a couple blowouts per month and save a few bucks. It's located in Clive, so if you're not feeling a trip to the East Village, this is definitely where you need to go.
Sahar's This traditional day spa has been a mainstay of Des Moines for many years. A few favorite services: Noni Body Wrap, Stress Relief Body Treatment, and the Crystalline Gemstone Facial.
East Village Day Spa The sheer variety of massages offered makes visiting the EV Spa a no-brainer. The signature massage includes aromatherapy, warm stones, and a back mask. If you're into body scrubs and massages, try the Gong Fu Chai Body Scrub with a 30 minute back massage.
